We live in a time that is defined by electronic snippets sown together to create a loose canopy of moral interpretations buffeting a landscape upon which groupings of people find themselves holding onto the dust of identity as the fate of the world plays itself out on social media platforms, RSS feeds, and you tube videos detailing interpretations of blood moons and various Machiavellian schema.
The dwindling and very precious commodity we call time is being expended on creating and defending new traditions that accommodate the latest manifestations of human ego. It is within this space that the believer finds his/herself: a space where faith and belief is both edified and contested.
In this current age, technological innovation has outpaced the ability of many believers to effectively manage messaging both sacred and profane across platforms. As such, many believers limit sharing or end up shunning the gospel in this space in hopes of not offending or being offended. The result is that social media is overwhelmed with spiritual messaging that offers more information than revelation. Yet, we need a word, a message, that infuses the social media space with revelation which helps us to understand the place of technology in God’s plan for salvation.
It is time for the revelation of God’s desire for technology’s use by and for the faith community, the church, the believer, to move to the center of cyberspace and into the cloud. Revelation has the capacity to move faster than the speed with which data is exchanged and believers must begin to rely on the Word of God to challenge and overtake the narratives of terror and hopelessness dominating social platforms. In other words the most important user of technology is the born-again believer. Why? Because of the power the born-again Christian possesses, especially in the cloud!
Between the proclamation made by Jesus that he has given us power (Luke 10:19) and his coming (again) “in the clouds with great power and glory” (Mark 13:26) requires people of faith to pay closer attention to the Word of God as it relates to technology. Believers should consider paying less attention to the hyperbole that elevates headlines and those who respond to them authoritatively above the revelation God’s Word has for this time.
The born again believer is called to be a witness in the cloud – the cumulus – where helplessness, hopelessness, and terror shape the meaning for the future: a future that seeks to diminish the power of God, Christ and the church. If we are his agents, his ministers, then we must believe and act in faith according to his Word. We have received power to be witnesses in all the earth (Acts 1:8) and in the cloud! In fact it is time for us to come alive, be caught up in the clouds and to meet the Lord in the air! (1Thessalonians 4:17)
So it important for the born again believer to engage in technology, to master the use of social media platforms, the syntax of this age, and spread the revelation of the role of technology in God’s plan for salvation. As it is written “Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.” (1Thessalonians 5:6) It is time for revelation to invade the cyberspace and for God’s people to unleash the power that has been given to us by Christ to sit atop of that mountain. Now that's revelation!
